Gantry Cranes

Gantry cranes are one of the most versatile lifting solutions available for industrial facilities. Whether used indoors or outdoors, temporary or permanent, fixed or mobile, gantry cranes provide reliable material handling without the need for runway beams or major building modifications. As part of our complete overhead crane equipment lineup, CRANE 1 designs, fabricates, installs, and services gantry cranes for a wide range of applications.

What Is a Gantry Crane

A gantry crane is an overhead lifting system supported by freestanding legs that ride on wheels or track. Unlike top running or underhung bridge cranes that rely on runway beams attached to the building, a gantry crane supports itself from the ground. This makes it an ideal solution when a building structure cannot support a traditional crane, when temporary lifting is required, or when outdoor material handling is needed.

CRANE 1 designs gantry systems to meet applicable OSHA regulations, ASME B30.2 requirements for overhead and gantry cranes, and CMAA guidelines, so your equipment is both productive and compliant.

Types of Gantry Cranes We Provide

Our engineering and field teams support a full range of gantry crane configurations. We customize each system to your load, duty cycle, span, and environment.

Full Gantry Cranes

Full gantry cranes use two freestanding legs to support the bridge and hoist. They are ideal for heavy duty lifting, outdoor yards, maintenance bays, and applications where full mobility across a defined area is required.

Semi Gantry Cranes

Semi gantry cranes use one leg that runs on the floor while the other side runs on a runway attached to the building structure. This design saves floor space, reduces steel costs, and integrates well with existing columns and walls.

Portable and Mobile Gantry Cranes

Portable gantry cranes are lighter duty, mobile solutions that can be moved around a facility as needed. They are common in maintenance shops, utilities, aviation, and service departments that require flexible lifting in multiple locations.

Custom Engineered Gantry Cranes

For unique lifting environments, CRANE 1 provides custom engineered gantry cranes. We tailor capacity, span, height, hoist selection, controls, duty class, and environmental protection to match your specific process and safety requirements.

Key Benefits of Gantry Cranes

Gantry cranes offer several advantages compared to traditional fixed runway systems.

  • No reliance on building structure or runway beams
  • Lower installation cost in many applications
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor environments
  • Can be relocated or repurposed as operations change
  • Highly configurable for span, height, and capacity
  • Minimal disruption to existing facility infrastructure

For many operations, a properly designed gantry crane is the most efficient way to introduce overhead lifting without extensive building modifications.

Typical Gantry Crane Applications

Gantry cranes are used across a wide range of industries that rely on safe and reliable material handling. CRANE 1 supports customers in markets such as aerospace, metals processing, energy and utilities, logistics, general manufacturing and more.

  • Loading and unloading trucks in outdoor yards
  • Staging and assembling large components
  • Maintenance lifting for pumps, gearboxes, and machinery
  • Handling coils, slabs, and fabricated steel
  • Supporting production cells where a fixed bridge crane is not feasible

Design, Fabrication, and Installation

As a full service provider, CRANE 1 manages the entire lifecycle of your gantry crane project. From concept to commissioning, our team focuses on safety, reliability, and long-term value.

  • Application engineering and crane sizing
  • Structural design according to CMAA and ASME guidelines
  • Selection of hoists, controls, and electrification
  • Fabrication and assembly of crane structures
  • On site installation and startup
  • Load testing and documentation for OSHA compliance

We integrate gantry cranes with new or existing hoists, below the hook devices, and other overhead crane equipment to create a complete, coordinated lifting solution.

Modernization and Automation Options

If you already operate gantry cranes, CRANE 1 can modernize your crane and hoist equipment to improve safety, performance, and lifecycle cost. Our modernization capabilities include:

  • Variable frequency drives for smoother motion and reduced mechanical wear
  • Upgraded controls and radio remote systems
  • Anti sway and load control technologies
  • Collision avoidance and zoning systems
  • New electrification systems and festooning
  • Condition monitoring and data logging for maintenance planning

Modernization is often the most cost-effective way to extend the life of an existing gantry crane while aligning with current OSHA, ASME, and CMAA expectations. Check out our modernization and upgrade page for more!
